Communication is more than just getting your point across, it’s a continuous feedback loop. Constant, and open, feedback can motivate others to bring their best game to your project or team – or send them into a tail spin. How are they spending their energy? Focusing on results or avoiding a fight?

Good feedback goes both ways and helps you stay tapped into why they show up at work to give your team their time and energy. With open feedback, you have the information you need to create a relationship that helps them grow so that they want to keep contributing to your business objectives. Win-win.
But sometimes this process gets broken.
Why does the feedback loop sometimes shut down?
When the feedback loop shuts down, there is usually only one culprit – fear. Both sides begin to fear the result of open feedback and before long the feedback cycle diminishes or stops all together.
[Tweet “Where there is fear there is no basis for effective feedback.”]
It doesn’t matter if the fear is justified or not. Where there is fear, there is no basis for open communication. Where there is fear, feedback loses it’s potential and – in the worst case – becomes a weapon. Where there is fear, emotional intelligence goes out the window and we’re all 7 years old and fighting on the playground again.
You can’t fix the feedback loop everywhere in your organization or your world, but you can fix it in your own relationships – with those you lead and interact with. You can be the one that stops the fear and gets the feedback loop working again. Be fearless. Be the change.
