If you’re a woman in business, you know the feeling of the Catch22 researchers call the double-bind* – when you speak assertively you’re viewed as an unattractive b#$%h, and when you’re too accommodating you’re viewed as timid and passive. Even though you work hard to develop your own authentic style, like many professional women, you probably find yourself stuck in this no-win scenario way too often.
And you’re suspicions are correct – this double-bind IS hampering your career! Even worse, biting your tongue too often means you’re witholding some of your own unique wisdom, knowledge and insight – which WILL BE the reason behind your career success when you learn to speak authentically, confidently and effectively.
What are you holding IN that’s holding you BACK?
Research shows that when women play by men’s rules, they don’t get ahead in the same way (Catalyst, 2011**). So why play by those rules? The #1 thing a woman can do to advance her professional career – whether breaking through the glass ceiling or succeeding in her own business – is to speak up, network, make sure people know about her accomplishments. And yet, most of us don’t know how to navigate the double-bind and speak authentically and powerfully. Now you can learn this subtle and powerful career skill!
When you’re stuck in the double-bind and speak up, these things can happen – but not when you learn how to speak confidently from your authentic core. When you learn to speak your truth – bringing your unique personal wisdom forth and releasing your fears about what others will think – then you become the leader people want to follow. You’ll impress your superiors, colleagues and clients alike!
It doesn’t do you any good to sit at the table, if you keep your mouth shut too often. When you deliver your truth correctly, hard-to-hear information is actually refreshing, impactful and makes you powerful – simply by being yourself. When you speak your truth you’ll find you can:

Yes, it’s a soft skill, but with hard impact. This is why I’ve been invited to teach this material to professionals as a faculty member at the George Washington University Center for Excellence in Public Leadership.
I’ve always been a good public speaker, but I realized years ago that the times I spoke up at work and actually got ahead, my success wasn’t because I spoke “well,” but because I spoke non-defensively and said things that mattered and resonated with my values. When I spoke my authentic truth (which came from aligning of my head and my heart) people listened in a different way. Even more importantly, I stopped hating my job – and hating myself for keeping my mouth shut when I had important things to contribute. Over time I realized I didn’t have to leave my true self and my integrity at the door every day when I left for the office. Speaking my truth allowed me to bring my authentic self to work. I felt like a whole person for the first time in decades!
This skill has really paid off for me. Early in my career, speaking my truth got me a plumb overseas assignment. But the big breakthrough was when I resolved to speak my truth always – and immediately started landing bigger, more strategic deals. I went from working for the Director of Marketing to the CEO – literally overnight – and my book of business grew along with it, even when I had to deliver news my clients didn’t want to hear. Another example: I recently landed triple the add-on business with a Fortune 100 association when I told the Board of Directors that my client (the CEO) was wrong – and I earned the CEO’s trust and respect in the process! It’s even helped my marriage survive some bruising bumps and scrapes along the way.
But learning to speak my truth was not easy. To learn how not to turn a tough conversation into a confrontation, and not put my audience on the defensive, I’ve had to let go of many fears and anxieties, and I’ve learned some surprisingly easy ways to do this that I’d like to pass on to you.
This skill has been so critical to my own happiness and professional effectiveness that as a coach I began documenting my process, researching and studying other speakers and leaders. I became determined to bring this skill to my clients. The program I’ve put together includes my personal favorite techniques as well as insights from academic research, psychology, group dynamics and even spirituality and mythology – all condensed into an accessible 5 week eCourse that will add power to your professional leadership skill set.

The very best thing about the course was to be able to take a live issue and to ponder out loud (over the member’s only forum) on what to do. Despite being continents apart, a timely bit of guidance comes back! I really wasn’t alone. Dana genuinely seemed to both be able to understand me and to be able to guide me.

My name is Dana Theus, founder of InPower Coaching and InPower Women. I’m a leadership consultant and I’ve spent the last 25 years of my career as a corporate executive and consultant learning the ropes of leadership and management at Fortune 100 companies, roller-coaster startups, government agencies and non-profits of all sizes. I’ve done it “their way” to achieve external power and “my way” to claim internal, personal power and I can tell you – personal power is the way to go. Once you access your InPower, you never feel powerless again and the sky’s the limit on external power you can achieve.
Claiming your personal power isn’t rocket science or super-secret sauce I cooked up. It’s modern psychology plus some ancient wisdom with a dollop of modern sensibility and a splash of “how to” common sense. It’s the same guru-juice I teach at the George Washington University Center for Excellence in Public Leadership – only packaged for busy working professionals like you.
I’m in this for both of us because that’s my mission – to change the world by helping leaders like you take back your power to make a difference - for yourself and the world. I can’t succeed unless you do. Join me!
