INSIGHT: Be Happier

by | Sep 20, 2013 | Coaching Advice, Insights & Inspiration

Happiness isn’t just about laughing.

Science is telling us amazing things about what lies in our world and in ourselves. And the stuff inside us is sometimes so “duh” you just have to trust your instincts.

According to preeminent thought leader, Dr. Martin Seligman, psychology is just now beginning to focus on the opposite of dysfunction and explore what makes us happy. The scientists are measuring and quantifying the excitement of first love, the satisfaction of a job well done and the glowing of making other’s lives better.

And guess what? They’re finding what we already know. Pleasure is important, but fleeting. Engagement is fulfilling. Meaning brings deep happiness.

Look at your leadership style as you’ve expressed it over this past week. In your efforts to deliver value, did you bring your customers and employees pleasure, meaning or engagement? Which did you seek and find as you went through your days?

The secret, it turns out, is in seeking, finding and creating for others – all three.

What will you do differently this weekend? Next week? “Design your perfect day,” says Dr. Seligman.

Now go live it.
