INSIGHT: Permission

by | Oct 18, 2013 | Coaching Advice, Insights & Inspiration

Have you ever explored the power of permission – for yourself? For your staff? For your family?

We accept things – rules, goals and boundaries – as though they are real and then they become real until we give ourselves and others permission to change them.

Everyone believes things are true that simply aren’t. We won’t get a good job until we get a certain degree. We have to invite Susan to lunch or we’ll hurt her feelings and will be a bad person. We must file the report by noon or our division will get a black mark.

Such beliefs help us structure and prioritize our energy and live according to our values, so they’re good! They also put us into ruts where we fail to question whether we’re living our best lives and achieving results that matter.

When we give ourselves permission to question these basic beliefs, break the rules for good cause and live outside the box sometimes, every day becomes an adventure.

Secret management technique: Give others permission sometimes too, and see what they become capable of. You might just be amazed.
