INSIGHT: Reframe

by | Jan 3, 2014 | Coaching Advice, Insights & Inspiration

When we start a new year, it’s tempting to list out everything we want to change, get depressed that we’ll never change and give up.

Change can be hard to imagine, so focus on reframing the present.

It’s a bit of a mental trick, but it can be very effective. Whether it’s the dynamic you have with your boss, your diet or how much you resent taking your poor pup for a walk after work when you’re tired, just rewrite the story a little bit.

First, identify the story that you want to change: “My boss thinks I’m an idiot.”

Second, perceive different ways to think about the reality your story describes: “My boss is waiting for me to prove myself.” “I started off with some big mistakes that set her opinion early on, which I have to prove were aberrations in my general abilities.” “My boss actually doesn’t think of me much at all, she treats everyone the same way and only acknowledges major successes, which I haven’t had yet.” Etc.

Finally, focus on the most empowering perception for you: “My boss is waiting for me to prove myself so I’m going to find opportunities to showcase my talent and ask for stretch assignments this year.”

Does it work every time? Yes, it works to get your out of your rut 100% of the time. Where your new rut takes you is up to you. Just don’t get stuck in it either.

Happy New Year! Today is always the start of something.
