INSIGHT: How to Disagree

by | Feb 13, 2013 | Coaching Advice, Insights & Inspiration

Do you believe that the most effective way to disagree is to agree first?

Student (from a position flat on his back): “I don’t understand. I hit you hard and you took the punch! How did I end up down here?”
Sensei (standing over him): “I took your energy and used it to put you where you wanted to put me.”

When someone disagrees with you, what’s your first reaction? To accept their judgment? To fight back? How about both?

Rarely is anything in human affairs black and white, so don’t get stuck trying to make it so. By accepting that there is generally a kernel of truth in every point of view you can disarm even the most strident opponents.

When they disagree with you, just agree with part of their point of view before addressing the remainder where you see things differently. Do this dispassionately and you’ll take much of the fight away at the outset.

It even works when you’re agreeing with someone from a different perspective.

Try it today.

Commit to it always.

Be the Sensei, not the poor guy on the floor.
