One person this week is annoyed at me and the other isn’t, despite on-time delivery to both. The difference? Expectation I set with them.
“Set expectations intentionally. That way you always get better results.” – Click to Tweet
How can two people have such different experiences of the same performance? It’s all in whether that performance was what they were expecting, better or worse. The actual result sometimes matters little.
Some people are just going to expect too much no matter what. But every time I find that other’s expectations are too high, I can identify at least one thing I did to help set them up there.
So next time I don’t do that one thing! The key is in being able to pause and reflect and give myself an opportunity to notice my own actions and patterns of behavior, so I can change them going forward.
How about you? Can you become a master of expectation setting? Give it a try. See what happens.
