A few nights ago I wrote a brilliant piece. Just brilliant. I was so proud. I sent it off for comment, so sure I’d get back kudos.
What came back an hour before I went to bed was a suggestion to completely reframe it.
*Sigh*
After a momentary whine, I did my “perspective trick” and looked at my brilliant discourse through the eyes of the person providing input.
Immediately I saw the perspective my piece had not conveyed – the thing they felt was important. It took me a few moments to weave that perspective into the piece, without completely rewriting it.
I wrote back a genuine, heartfelt, thanks to the person who had done me the service of helping me see my work through a lens I could not find on my own.
I think it’s even more brilliant now.
What lens does criticism offer you? Do you accept it for what it is, respect it for the perspective it offers, and look to see what you can see?
