What if quieting the noise was as simple as deciding what to listen to?
It’s a new year and the band is already playing! I recently noticed a music instructor picking out certain instruments in his band to give individuals feedback while the group played on. His ear was so tuned he could tell a trumpet from a French horn (I couldn’t). I wondered “how does he do that?”
Practice, of course, but I’m betting he also mastered a special skill, which is the ability to set his intention on hearing one instrument at a time, and so his ears intuitively screen out the others and bring him the object of his attention.
We can do this too, to bring us success, respite, change, new jobs, new bodies, new anything we want. As long as the calendar says January, you have the right to live in the beginning of 2013, which means you also have the opportunity to decide what you will listen for in the months ahead.
If you knew that such intentional focus would bring you the sweetest music of your life, would you listen? Would you learn to screen out the noise that makes your shoulders tense and concentrate on the gentle melodies that lift your heart? Would you tune into the drum beats that fire you up? What music would you listen to?
The world is noisy. You can decide what music to hear. ~Dana Theus
