Gratitude and Work-Life – or Life-Work?

by | Nov 22, 2012 | Commentary

Happy Thanksgiving! In the U.S. we love to look forward to this day of family and food. And we love to dread a few traditions that usually come along with family and food, too. And somehow work just doesn’t slow down.

Here’s a little secret to managing the work-life craziness.

Let the gratitude in NOW and keep it.

Don’t worry about “balance”, just be you. In your life. Now. Don’t strive to have it all, simply have what is yours now In this moment. Carry gratitude with you through the nuttiness, and the too much or too little family and food, and the work that doesn’t stop. Pretend that whatever you’re grateful for is bigger than everything else in your life and your day, and watch the rest of it suck less of your energy as you give more to the gratitude that is giving to you.

When gratitude fills me, I’m so much better at my jobs – all of them – Thank YOU

Yes, I still get a little full of too much family and food, but that’s ok, because I’m also stuffed full of gratitude – for you and for all the wonderful people who are helping me, themselves and our world by bringing more power into their lives one choice at a time. I’m grateful for my family and my dog. I’m grateful for the Internet and Apple products. I’m grateful for an economy slowly on the rise. I’m grateful for the resilience of the human spirit.

When in doubt, say thank you.

This grateful optimism sees me through the challenging times of building and managing a business. It builds employee loyalty and business relationships for me that pay off financially and otherwise. It makes my life worth living and my business worth running. I couldn’t run my business or my life without it. It’s one of my most important business assets. Soon Thanksgiving will be over, and I’ll be grateful that I still have gratitude to take with me throughout the next twelve months until I’m a bit too full of it again.

Happy Thanksgiving, my friend. I’m oh, so grateful for you.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.  ~Melody Beattie
